US Elections: What We Know So Far

November 04, 2020

The US elections have officially closed, and so far the presidential race is too close to call as millions of votes have yet to be counted.

On Tuesday, 3 November, millions of citizens across the country took to the voting polls, with the major two-party candidates being Republican incumbent, President Donald Trump, and Democratic former vice president, Joe Biden.

So far, Trump has won 213 electoral college votes, while Biden has won 238. To win the presidency, either man must gain 270 votes.

While several states – including Georgia, Nevada and Pennsylvania – may take several days to tally the remaining votes, it did not stop Trump from falsely claiming a premature election victory on Wednesday morning, 4 November.

He also threatened to go to the US Supreme court to halt the vote-counting, claiming that electoral fraud had been committed in the Democrats’ favour.

Biden’s campaign, however, has rebuked Trump for his comments, and that they “have legal teams standing by ready to deploy to resist that effort.”

The winner of the national election will be announced in due course.
