US and North Korea Escalate Threats

September 21, 2017

The world watches in fear as America and North Korea trade new insults and threats.

In a heavy-handed speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump was highly critical of North Korea.

Trump said that the US has “great strength and patience”. He added, however, that America will “have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea” if the Asian country does not scale back their military threats.

The US President also called North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, a “rocket man”, an insult meant to draw attention to Kim’s perceived obsession with missiles.

Trump’s address has been divisive, leaving many world leaders rattled, while others have offered their support.
Sweden, Iran and Venezuela were critical of the speech, arguing that threats and insults will only serve to escalate North Korea’s aggression.

Israel, Russia and South Korea have expressed support for Trump’s address. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he has “never heard a bolder or more courageous speech”.

North Korea’s foreign minister, Ri Yong-ho, has called Trumps threats “the sound of a dog barking”. He stated that North Korea is not afraid of America, and that he “feels sorry” for Trump’s advisors.

This latest exchange does nothing to calm the current political climate of tension and fear. Countries across the globe have stepped up their military drills in preparation for another possible world war.

As tensions continue to soar between superpowers, many reports speculate the real possibility of a nuclear war. In his UN address Japan’s prime minister, Shinzo Abe, said that the world is running out of time to find a peaceful solution to North Korea’s escalating nuclear tests.
