US: 2 Shootings, Just Hours and States Apart

August 05, 2019

Two deadly shootings have played out within 24 hours of each other over the weekend in the states of Texas and Ohio in the USA.

The first shooting occurred on Saturday, 3 August, at a Walmart near El Paso, Texas. Local news outlets reported that a lone gunman entered the mall, and then proceeded to fire indiscriminately at shoppers. At least 20 have been confirmed dead.

The second shooting occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, when another gunman began shooting sporadically near a popular nightlife scene in Dayton, Ohio. At least nine people – including the gunman’s sister – were confirmed dead, whilst 27 others were injured in the attack.

Security footage from both shootings show that the gunmen were armed with assault rifles and safety gear. Both had written controversial manifestos outlining their beliefs which reflected largely racist, anti-immigrant views.

US President Trump posted on twitter: “God bless the people of El Paso, Texas. God bless the people of Dayton, Ohio.”

President Trump is expected to address the nation later today.

Investigations are currently ongoing.
