Update: Girl Found By Nigerian Army Not Part of Chibok Group
It was reported yesterday that the NIgerian army had found another girl believed to be part of the Chibok group of girls that were abducted by Boko Haram in 2014.
However, it has now come to light that the girl found by the troops was not part of the group of 276 girls taken by the terrorist group.
The Nigerian presidency has retracted its statement saying that the girl was part of the Chibok group of girls.
NIgerian vice president, Yemi Osinbajo, posted the new information on social media, tweeting that the girl that was found was not part of the group, but was a student from the Chibok community.
They also revealed that the girl is 15 years old.
While the girl may not have been part of the original group of abducted girls, she was, however, also a captive of Boko Haram.
The #BringBackOurGirls group, who has been campaigning internationally for the return of the girls, commented on the case of mistaken identity on Twitter, saying that while the girl is not part of the original group, they are nevertheless happy about her freedom.
“We’ve perused our list but can’t find the name of the returnee said to be 1 of our #ChibokGirls…Whether 1 of our missing #ChibokGirls or not, we are excited over everyone who regains their freedom & we look forward to all returning [sic],” the group tweeted.
The Nigerian presidency estimates that there are still around 100 girls missing. They have also vowed to increase their efforts in ensuring the return of the girls.
