April 06, 2016

As South Africans, we are all fairly acquainted with a braai. And as South Africans we have probably tried braaiing almost everything under the sun. However, there might be a few things that we haven’t thought of gooing on the braai, but are oh so delicious!

Try some of these quirky yet delicious braai recipes

Spicy glazed watermelon

What you need:

honey

Cayenne pepper

Salt

Lime

Mint

Mix the honey, lime, Cayenne pepper and salt together in a mixing bowl. Then brush both sides of skewered watermelon pieces with the glaze.

Braai for about two minutes on both sides and sprinkle with shredded mint leaves when serving.

Stuffed Bell peppers

What you need:

Bell peppers (any colour you prefer)

Red onion

Bread crumbs

1 egg

zucchini

Pepper

Start by slicing the red onion and zucchini into thin slithers, then dice. Combine the egg with the breadcrumbs and chopped parsley to make a doughy paste. Then, add the chopped onion and zucchini to the breadcrumb mixture and stuff inside hollowed out peppers

Place on the braai with the bottom side down and braai for about 20 minutes or until the breadcrumb mixture hardens a bit. Serve with salt and pepper.

Seasoned Avocado

This is great to use in a salad or just as a snack by itself

You will need:

As many avos as you want

Salt

Pepper

Coriander (if you wish)

Start by cutting the avocado lengthwise into thick pieces. Then, season with salt and pepper to taste and, if you so wish, chopped coriander.
Then, on a griddle, grill your avocado pieces for about two minutes until it is a little charred. This is best served with a crisp salad or on baked bruschetta.
