UN Workers Kidnapped in Darfur
According to a local government official from Sudan, three United Nations workers have been kidnapped by armed gunmen in Darfur.
Darfur is is the most war-torn region in the country.
According to the official, the UN workers were refugee workers. Two of the three UN workers that were kidnapped are Nepalese with one being local from Sudan.
It has been confirmed that they were abducted in Geneina, the capital of West Darfur state.
A spokesperson for the state government, Abdelah Mustafa, confirmed the kidnapping, and said that police were busy searching for the workers and the kidnappers.
“…A group of armed men kidnapped yesterday three UNHCR workers, two Nepalese and a Sudanese, from Geneina…Police are searching for the kidnappers,” he said.
Darfur is one of the most dangerous regions on the African content, with the country being engulfed in a terrible war since 2003. It is believed that more than 300 000 people have been killed since the conflict started and over 2.5 million people have been displaced.
It has not yet been confirmed if the kidnappers were demanding ransom for the UN workers.
