UN, UK Leaders To Hold Talks Over Somali Crisis
The United Nations will be holding talks with British leaders, including Prime Minister Theresa May, to discuss the worsening humanitarian situation in Somalia.
Somalia is currently in the depths of an ever-expanding humanitarian and security crisis, as drought, famine and violence ravage the country.
UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, along with Theresa May and Somali president, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, are expected to meet in London to discuss ways to curb the humanitarian crisis and prevent a country-wide famine.
Guterres – who has previously called for more aid for Somalia – has said while it has, thus far, been averted in the country, it would not take much to descend into total famine.
Other humanitarian agencies and charities working in Somalia have also warned of the impending threat of full-blown famine.
Kevin Watkins, CEO of the Save The Children humanitarian charity, said that the country is definitely on its way to famine, despite being avoidable.
He also called for increased financial aid from the World Bank and has urged other countries to cancel the struggling African country’s debt.
The situation in Somalia has deteriorated sharply since the devastating drought started in November of last year.
Since then, thousands of Somalis have been displaced without access to food or water of medical aid.
