UK Teacher Hailed for Feeding Hungry Students

In the midst of a nationwide lockdown against the coronavirus, a school teacher in England has been lauded for doing his part to distribute food to his students.

Zane Powles – an assistant headteacher at Western Primary School in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire – recently completed 17 weeks of making 85 packed lunches for his quarantined pupils.

Walking eight kilometres every morning after preparing the lunches at the school, the 48-year-old educator then hand-delivered them to his students’ homes, which gave him an opportunity to check on their wellbeing.

He said: “I wanted to make sure I could see them all … I needed to know if they were safe, if they were healthy, and if they had access to food.”

Hailed for his heroic efforts, Powles was awarded runner-up in the Reed Improving Lives Award for Education.

Calling the achievement an “honour”, Powles humbly added: “The past few months have been extremely difficult for the children, and I wanted to do something where we supported those who were struggling at home during lockdown. To see the difference it has made to their lives has been fantastic.”
