UK Foreign Secretary Arrives in Somalia

March 15, 2017

British Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, has arrived in Somalia’s capital of Mogadishu for a surprise visit.

According to an aide of Somali president, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, Boris Johnson has arrived in the country and will be holding talks with the Somali president.

Johnson’s visit to the country comes at a time when Britain is said to be appealing to various human rights organisations to aid Somalia, as the country continues to battle extreme drought and hunger crises. The severe drought plaguing Somalia has been declared a national disaster.

The visit was not made public, for reasons unknown, and the presidential aide who confirmed Johnson’s arrival in the country also wished to stay anonymous, as he was not authorised to speak to the media.

According to the aide, however, the president will meet with Johnson at the airport where they are expected to discuss various issues which will mostly center around Somalia’s humanitarian crisis and Britain’s bid for aid for the country.

This is the first time newly elected president Mohamed will meet with the British Foreign Secretary.
