Ugandan President Seeks Re-Election in 2021
Uganda’s ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), has endorsed President Yoweri Museveni as its candidate for the 2021 elections.
The 74-year-old president – who has been in power since 1986 – won his fifth term in office in 2016. With NRM’s endorsement, he will now seek to be re-elected for a sixth term.
The decision to endorse Museveni as a candidate was adopted at a five-day committee meeting which concluded on Monday evening, 18 February. It will now go to the party membership for formal confirmation.
According to NRM spokesperson, Rogers Mulindwa, the party wants Museveni to “continue leading the movement and the state in 2021 and beyond to eliminate bottlenecks to transformation.”
The president’s candidacy comes after he signed a bill that bars candidates aged 75 and over from running for presidency, as he believed that African leaders who “overstayed” in office were the root of Africa’s problems.
Despite this proclamation, Museveni himself believes that he will not give up his position as he “still has work to do”.
