Uganda: President Museveni Releases Home Workout Video

April 14, 2020

As people around the world adapt to isolating themselves at home due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), others are exercising in the same space – Uganda’s president, Yoweri Museveni, has even released his own workout video.

The 75-year-old statesman took to Twitter last Thursday, 9 April, to encourage Ugandans to exercise in the safety of their own homes.

Museveni posted a video of himself dressed in a grey tracksuit, jogging barefoot around his office before doing 30 press-ups.

In the caption, he said: “Yesterday, I discouraged people who have been jogging in groups, exposing themselves to risk amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. You do not have to go outdoors to exercise. Here is my demonstration of how you can exercise indoors and stay safe.”

Uganda entered a two-week national lockdown on 31 March. However, social media has still seen videos and photos of citizens jogging outside, and not practising social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Official reports state that over 5 000 people have been tested for the virus, with 53 cases confirmed.
