Uganda: Country Entering “Dangerous Phase”

June 23, 2020

Ugandan president, Yoweri Museveni, has shared a sombre message with his country as it heads into a precarious phase of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The 75-year-old statesman spoke during a televised address on Monday night, 22 June, warning that new COVID-19 cases were being reported among citizens whose contacts could not be traced – whereas previous cases were from those returning from abroad.

Museveni said that the country was entering a “more dangerous phase”, and declared that 33 districts would have restrictions on public and private transport lifted; some restrictions would remain.

However, high population areas consisting of refugees, or major transport hubs would be strictly monitored; schools and places of worship would remain closed; and the night-time curfew would remain in effect.

Uganda has recorded 774 confirmed cases of COVID-19, from which 631 people have recovered. No casualties have been reported thus far.
