Uganda: 19 Killed in Fuel Truck Explosion
At least 19 people have died after a fuel truck collided with three other vehicles and exploded in Western Uganda over the weekend.
According to reports, the truck was driving through Kyambura trading centre – a mountainous area near the Queen Elizabeth National Park – in Rubirizi district on Sunday evening, 18 August.
The truck was en-route from Kenya to the Democratic Republic of Congo when the incident occurred.
Regional police spokesperson, Martial Tumusiime, explained: “Ten people died instantly when the fuel truck lost control and hit three other vehicles, leading to multiple explosions that also burned 25 small shops.”
Nine bodies have so far been retrieved and transported to a nearby health centre “for further post-mortem analysis and DNA profiling”.
Tumusiime added that the other nine people – who were injured in the incident and hospitalised – later died from their wounds.
The incident comes just eight days after a fuel truck exploded in Tanzania, killing 95 people.
