UEFA Fines Real Madrid Trio
Kylian Mbappe and two other Real Madrid players have been heavily fined by UEFA for inappropriate conduct during a match.
Back in March, Los Blancos beat Atletico Madrid 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw on aggregate in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.
However, their victory was overshadowed by the post-match celebrations, during which Mbappe, Antonio Rudiger and Dani Ceballos made obscene gestures – including throat-slashing motions – in front of their opponents’ supporters.
After receiving a formal complaint from Atletico, UEFA initiated disciplinary proceedings against the Real Madrid trio, whose appeal against the charges was rejected.
On Monday, 7 July, the football governing body ruled that Rudiger, Mbappe and Ceballos had breached Article 11.2.b. of their disciplinary regulations, namely the “basic rules of decent conduct.”
As a result, the three players have been fined €40 000, €30 000 and €20 000, respectively. Additionally, Rudiger and Mbappe were each handed a one-match suspension, which will take effect if they commit similar offences in the future.
