UEFA Champions League Draw: Highlights

From jaw dropping draws to dream worthy award wins, let’s take a look at the top moments of the 2019 UEFA Champions League draw ceremony, which took place last night, Thursday, 29th August at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.

Annually, during the Champions League draw ceremony, UEFA names the previous seasons’ Men’s Player of the Year, as well as positional awards. Liverpool’s defender Virgil van Dijk was named the former, as well as the Defender of the Season.

The Dutchman became the first defender to win the award, beating Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who have won the Men’s Player of the Year award five times between them.

Ronaldo left Monaco empty-handed while Messi received the Forward of the Season award. Liverpool’s Alisson Becker won Goalkeeper of the Season while Frenkie de Jong of Barcelona was named Midfielder of the Season.

As for the draw itself, the 32 teams were drawn into Groups A to H. Barcelona was handed a tough Group F, which will see them battle against Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan. Another challenging draw is Group A, where Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid will do battle.

Surprisingly, Ronaldo revealed that he would like to become friends with Messi. When asked if he missed the Argentine, Ronaldo said: “Of course we have a good relationship, we have not had dinner together yet but I hope in the future”.
