Tunisia: Zero New COVID-19 Cases Recorded

May 12, 2020

The health ministry of Tunisia has announced that the country has recorded no new coronavirus (COVID-19) infections since early March, just as the government intends relaxing the current restrictions.

The north African country confirmed its first infected individual on 2 March. Currently, it has 1 032 active cases, with 45 lives lost during the ongoing pandemic.

Health authorities claim that 727 citizens have recovered, while 11 remain hospitalised.

However, no new cases have been reported for a consecutive second day.

Tunisia’s government started relaxing restrictions on movement and businesses last week, allowing food, construction and transport sectors to begin operating again.

It announced on Monday, 11 May, that most businesses – including shopping malls, clothing stores and hair salons – would be permitted to re-open next Sunday, 24 May.

Despite the easing of restrictions, the health ministry is urging citizens to respect the law, and to maintain the rules of social distancing across all regions to ensure that the virus remains contained.
