Trump Urges Spain to Build Wall Across the Sahara

September 20, 2018

US President Donald Trump has reportedly suggested that the Spanish government should build a wall across the Sahara desert to help solve Europe’s current migration crisis.

According to Spain’s foreign minister, Josep Borrell, he allegedly made this recommendation when Borrell accompanied King Felipe and Queen Letizia to the White House in June this year.

When Borrell pointed out that the Sahara stretched for approximately 5 000 km, President Trump apparently replied: “The Sahara border can’t be bigger than our border with Mexico.”

President Trump has famously called for a wall to be built along the 3 200 km-long US-Mexico border to curb illegal immigration to the US.

Spain has experienced a surge in migration, with over 33 000 migrants and refugees arriving this year on the country’s shores via the Mediterranean sea.

When asked for more details on Borrell’s comments, which were made at a luncheon on Tuesday, a spokesman for the foreign ministry said: “We can confirm that’s what the minister said, but we won’t be making any further comment on [Borrell’s] remarks.”
