Trump Talks With Buhari, Zuma

Newly elected US president, Donald Trump, has had telephonic conversations with both the president of NIgeria, Muhammadu Buhari, and the president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma.

This is the first time since taking office in January that Trump has spoken to prominent African leaders. Buhari and Zuma are the leaders of Africa’s two biggest economies.

According to Buhari’s office, the conversation between Trump and Buhari went smoothly, and the two presidents discussed ways to combat terrorism in the country.

They also said that Trump praised Buhari on his government’s efforts to fight terrorist group, Boko Haram, and their persistent effort in securing the return of the missing Chibok girls.

Trump also congratulated Buhari on the safe return of 24 of the Chibok girls late last year.

“President Trump encouraged President Buhari to keep up the good work he is doing, and also commended him for the efforts made in rescuing 24 of the Chibok Girls and the strides being taken by the Nigerian military,” a part of the statement by Buhari’s office read.

Trump also said that the US would look into cutting a new deal with the country in terms of aiding with military weapons.

Trump also invited Buhari to Washington at a ‘mutually convenient date’ for both parties.

Jacob Zuma’s office also released a statement about Trump’s call to the South African president.

Zuma’s office said that Trump and Zuma discussed strengthening bilateral relationships between the US and South Africa.

They also said that both presidents expressed the need to work together in “the quest for peace and stability on the African country”.

Trump is yet to schedule an official, presidential visit to any African country.
