Tropical Storm Dorian: Puerto Rico Holds Breath

August 28, 2019

Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic are keeping an eye on tropical storm Dorian as it slowly rumbles in a west-northwest direction towards the island nations, with authorities warning that it could become a hurricane by late Wednesday afternoon, 28 August.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued a hurricane watch and tropical storm warnings for both countries. A hurricane is expected within the next 24 hours.

Dorian has been gathering strength since Monday, 26 August, to the extent that many countries in its path declared national emergencies on the same day in anticipation.

The move allows US federal agencies to initiate aid and co-ordinate disaster relief.

Experts are predicting the storm’s centre to pass over or near Puerto Rico later today, or south of the area tonight and then move north tomorrow.

Many are worried that the approaching storm will wreak havoc and cause power cuts and damage property – Puerto Rico is still recovering from the destruction left behind by Hurricane Maria in 2017.
