Tracy Chapman Suing Nicki Minaj over “Sorry” Track

October 25, 2018

Singer Tracy Chapman is suing Nicki Minaj for allegedly sampling one of her songs without permission.

In the recently filed lawsuit, Chapman claims that Minaj’s song, “Sorry”, uses the lyrics and vocal melody from her 1988 single, “Baby Can I Hold You”.

Chapman also claims that she repeatedly denied multiple requests from the “Super Bass” hitmaker and her team to sample her song for her fourth album, “Queen”.

Per media reports, Minaj released “Sorry” in August this year, but did not include it on her latest album. However, the song reportedly premiered on New York radio station’s Hot 97 before it made its way online.

In a since-deleted tweet, Minaj said she “had no clue” that the song contained an unauthorised sample, and reached out to Chapman on Twitter in August when it was released.

Chapman is seeking unspecified damages and wants to prevent Minaj from releasing “Sorry” commercially, as well as prevent Minaj from “copying or otherwise using or exploiting” her work.
