Tonda Eckert Escapes Immediate Ban Over Spygate Scandal
Southampton manager Tonda Eckert can continue leading his side after an independent Football Association panel issued a six-week suspended ban, a £28 000 fine, and a reprimand.
The suspension, running until the end of the 2027–28 season, will only trigger if he repeats the offence.
The sanction follows charges of misconduct after a junior analyst intern was caught secretly filming Middlesbrough’s training ahead of May’s Championship play-off semi-final. Southampton also spied on Oxford United and Ipswich Town.
Consequently, the English Football League (EFL) expelled Saints from the play-off final against Hull City and imposed a four-point penalty for the current campaign.
Eckert, who was unaware his actions breached regulations, accepted full responsibility, sought forgiveness, and expressed deep contrition. Despite facing death threats and initial squad friction, he retained firm board support and has since guided Saints to 13th in the table.
Welcoming the outcome, Southampton owner Dragan Solak stated: “We have already suffered enough, and we appreciate the panel’s recognition of that.”
While Solak praised the FA process, he heavily criticised the EFL’s conduct, adding: “the way they have subsequently treated us is not something we will forget.”
