Togo President Appoints First Female PM

September 29, 2020

The president of Togo has appointed politician Victoire Tomegah Dogbe as the country’s new prime minister.

On Monday, 28 September, President Faure Gnassingbe announced that Dogbe would serve as the West African country’s prime minister – the first time that a woman has ever held the position.

Her appointment comes three days after her predecessor, Komi Selom Klassou, announced his resignation after five years of holding the post.

Prior to taking over from Klassou, 60-year-old Dogbe served in various other ministerial positions since 2008, notably as a minister of grass roots development and youth employment. She also currently serves as chief of staff of the president’s office.

Evers since Gnassingbe was re-elected for a fourth term in office in February, Togo’s presidency was expected to undergo a political reshuffle.

However, this reshuffle was delayed due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, which has so far infected 1 749 citizens and resulted in 47 deaths.
