These Glasses Help Colour-Blind People See World in New Light
A new library initiative in St. John’s County, Florida, is proving to be a real turn-up for the books, with colour-blind patrons now being able to enjoy their reading material in a whole new way.
Earlier this week, the St. Johns County Public Library System announced their “Colour Your World” programme, through which they offer specialised glasses for visitors who are colour-blind.
The glasses – created by EnChroma for those who cannot distinguish between certain colours – were purchased with the help of a $13 000 grant awarded by the non-profit Barbara A. Kay Foundation.
Five pairs of the glasses were purchased for each of its six county branches.
Debra Rhodes Gibson, director of the library system, explained: “EnChroma glasses will allow those who cannot see colours as well or vibrantly to enjoy and experience colour as much as everyone else does.”
One such patron, Steven Apte, praised the specialised eyewear for adding a splash of colour to both his dulled vision and reading experience: “I missed [colours] all my life. I guess you didn’t really realise it until you get something like this.”
