Theresa May Set to Visit Africa
Theresa May will be travelling to Africa this week for the first time since becoming prime minister of Britain in 2016.
Accompanied by a 29-strong business delegation, May will be visiting three African nations – South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya.
The visit is reportedly a bid to strengthen ties with economies outside the European Union, from which the United Kingdom will depart in 2019, in a move known as Brexit.
In a written statement, she said: “As we prepare to leave the European Union, now is the time for the UK to deepen and strengthen its global partnerships.”
The prime minister is also expected to address security issues, including the role of British troops based in Kenya who are training local troops to fight al-Shabab militants in Somalia.
Prime Minister May will be delivering a keynote address on trade in Cape Town on Tuesday, before flying to Abuja on Wednesday to meet with Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari.
A state dinner on Thursday hosted by Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, will conclude the trip.
