Swaziland To Send Elephants To US Zoos
In an effort to prevent poaching, Swaziland has announced that they plan on sending some of their elephants to zoos in the united States in a desperate attempt to keep them safe.
However, some conservationists in South Africa and Swaziland are opposing the decision to send the elephants to to zoos in the United States as they believe tit will have a negative impact on the animals.
A total of 18 elephants are to be relocated.
In opposition to the concerns of the South African conservationists, a US official who is part of the relocation effort, has said that they would ensure that the relocation of the elephants will be as humanely as possible and that they would make sure it is permissible under international law.
The US Fish and Wildlife Service has already approved the relocation on their part.
The 18 African elephants will be relocated from Swaziland to various zoos in the US including the Dallas Zoo in Texas, the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas, and the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska.
Robert Dreher, associate director of the US Fish and Wildlife Service said that he recognises that the fears of the conservationists, but that they would ensure the elephants are handles with care and as humanely as possible.
He also said that the relocation of the elephants should not threaten the conservation of the species.
