Sudan Government and Armed Groups Continue Peace Talks

December 07, 2018

The Sudanese government and two armed groups from the Darfur region, have continued to their peaceful resolutions, after signing a pre-negotiations agreement on Thursday, 6 December.

The declaration of principles was signed in Berlin, Germany, with Sudan’s Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and the Sudan Liberation Movement-Minni Minnawi (SLM-MM), and a special presidential envoy from the Sudanese government.

The talks were supported by the Berghof Foundation, and facilitated through the German foreign ministry.

The Agreement outlines that the signatories would resume talks on the basis of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD); One of the highest points on the agenda would be critical issues between the two groups that can pave the way for sustainable peace.

An independent implementation mechanism will be created to ensure the agreement reached by the parties is enforced.

The consensus has paved the way for further peace talks in Qatar next year.
