Students Staying Out Of School Due To Hunger
Zimbabwe’s drought crisis is reaching new levels as the drought is causing dozens of students to stay out of school due to hunger.
With the drought wreaking havoc on Zimbabwe and causing water and food scarcities, pupils are staying out of school due to the simple fact that they are hungry and suffering from malnutrition.
The drought – that has been plaguing the country for the past 5 months – has caused thousands of Zimbabweans to go hungry and live without water.
The Zimbabwean UN ambassador also recently appealed to the United Nations and other countries to help Zimbabwe and it’s people before an extreme hunger crisis ensues.
Unicef has also reported that close to one million children from southern parts of Africa were suffering from acute malnutrition, and the current drought situation only seems to be worsening the situation.
Boithathelo Mnguni, provincial director of Matebeleland North, told reporters that there are dozens of children staying out of school due to hunger:
“…They are not dropping out of school, because dropping out means someone is no longer interested in school. They are absent from school because of hunger. We are recording lot of absenteeism in schools,” he said.
The UN is desperately trying to raise more funds to help drought stricken Zimbabwe, with an estimated $80 million raised thus far.
