Sterling Dropped by England after Gomez Bust-Up

November 12, 2019

Manchester City, forward, Raheem Sterling, has been dropped from England’s upcoming Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro, after he was allegedly involved in a bust-up with Liverpool’s Joe Gomez.

Near the end of the Citizens’ match against the Reds last Sunday, 10 November, Sterling and Gomez – who also plays for England’s national team – were involved in a heated confrontation. They appeared to make amends by embracing each other after Liverpool won 3-1.

The next day, however, Sterling allegedly grabbed Gomez by the throat in the England players’ canteen at St George’s Park training centre. Their team-mates were forced to intervene and separate the pair.

Despite Sterling apologising for his actions, manager Gareth Southgate revealed in a recent statement that the 24-year-old forward will not form part of the squad playing against Montenegro this Thursday, 14 November.

Southgate said: “My feeling is that the right thing for the team is the action we have taken. Now that the decision has been made with the agreement of the entire squad, it’s important that we support the players and focus on Thursday night.”
