Ster-Kinekor reports biggest week ever

April 13, 2015

Following on the news earlier this week that Ster-Kinekor had recorded its biggest weekend box office in history, the attendances for this week have achieved another new record for the country’s leading cinema chain, beating the previous ‘best week’ that was set 17 years ago.

The record-breaking week at the box office (03 – 09 April) has been spearheaded by the national release of the action thriller, Fast & Furious 7 on Thursday, 02 April. This film has been the major driving force in sending box office sales and cinema attendances for the week to an all-time record high.

There have also been strong box office performances from other titles currently on the Ster-Kinekor circuit. These include the weekend release of Disney’s Cinderella, Home (now in its second week) and two popular local films, Strikdas and Ballade vir ‘n Enkeling, in its third week on the circuit.

Says Doug Place, Marketing Executive of Ster-Kinekor Theatres: "Across the company, we had been gearing up for what we anticipated would be – and was – a very big weekend for Ster-Kinekor cinemas – and we are delighted that it has turned into the busiest week in our history! We would like to take this opportunity to thank South African audiences who came out in their thousands during this past week, to watch one of the most anticipated releases of 2015."

The previous record for the biggest week in Ster-Kinekor’s recorded history was set in the late December 1997, with three titles contributing to this record: Titanic, My Best Friend’s Wedding and Bean.

"The question we ask ourselves now is: how many more box office records will be broken at Ster-Kinekor cinemas this year? With the imminent release of Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron on 24 April locally, a whole week before its official US release, we are also expecting a great performance from this title, considering that it will also be available in 3D (unlike Fifty Shades of Grey and Fast & Furious 7) and will also be screened in our IMAX and Cine Prestige cinemas.

"In fact, we are confident that with the exciting slate of titles we have lined up as we head towards the second half of the year – including the new Minions movie (10 July), Mission Impossible 5 (07 August), Spectre (the new Bond film releasing on 27 November), the final installment of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 (November 2015) and the eagerly-awaited return of Star Wars with Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens on the big screen in December – 2015 is certainly looking to be the biggest box office year in Ster-Kinekor’s history," concludes Place.
