Spurs’ Cristian Romero Bound for Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid are poised to sign defender Cristian Romero from Tottenham Hotspur.
According to reports as of Wednesday, 12 August, the Spanish outfit has come to an agreement in principle with Tottenham over Romero’s signature.
The deal is said to be valued at around £34.2 million and includes a 15% sell-on clause for Tottenham. The North London club is said to have rejected interest from rivals Arsenal to help facilitate the 28-year-old Argentina international’s move to Spain.
Joining Spurs in 2021, Romero scored 13 goals in 156 appearances across all competitions during his five-season stint.
His imminent departure comes after a period of mixed fortunes, including captaining Spurs amid a difficult English Premier League relegation battle last season.
Romero’s signing marks Atletico’s fourth summer acquisition, as they continue to strengthen their squad under head coach Diego Simeone.
Additionally, fellow defender Djed Spence is also expected to depart Spurs, with Inter Milan reportedly close to agreeing to a £25.6-million deal.
