Spurs Captain Faces Surgery as Injury Plight Continues

January 20, 2026

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that captain Ben Davies is undergoing surgery today, Tuesday 20 January, after fracturing his left ankle during their 2-1 loss to West Ham last Saturday, 17 January.

The 33-year-old defender, who required oxygen before being stretchered off the pitch, now faces an extended period on the sidelines.

The timing is disastrous for both club and country. Tottenham manager Thomas Frank is currently facing intense pressure to retain his position, amid a 14th-place standing in the English Premier League and a massive availability crisis.

Davies’ absence leaves Spurs with only 11 fit senior outfield players for tonight’s Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund, with stars like Micky van de Ven and James Maddison also unavailable.

The injury also threatens Wales’ World Cup ambitions. National manager Craig Bellamy recently described Davies as his “best player”, emphasising the void the captain’s absence will leave ahead of March’s play-off against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

With Davies’ Tottenham contract expiring in six months, there are growing fears he may have played his final game for the North London club. No official timeframe has been set for his return, which is contingent upon a successful rehabilitation process.
