‘SpongeBob’ cleans SA Box Office

Popular TV show SpongeBob SquarePants is back for a second round on the big screen and the sequel has debuted at number one at the South African box office. Following at number two is sci-fi epic Jupiter Ascending which stars Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum.

The Wedding Ringer starring comedian Kevin Hart debuts at number 4 while local Afrikaans film Mooirivier starts off at number 5.

Among other debuts, Oscar nominated film Selma opened at number nine. The true life events film follows Dr Martin Luther King Jr. and his civil rights movement who fights for equal voting rights by marching from Selma to Montgomery.

The oldest film on the chart is none other than Taken 3 which sits at number six and has so far banked R16,518,613 in SA to date.
