Spike Lee Sorry for Defending Woody Allen

June 15, 2020

Filmmaker Spike Lee has apologised after initially voicing his support for longtime friend, Woody Allen, and criticising “cancel” culture.

Eighty-four-year-old Allen is facing claims that he molested his daughter, actress Dylan Farrow, when she was seven-years-old. He has denied the allegations and has yet to be charged.

While speaking to hosts Len Berman and Michael Riedel on radio station 710 WOR’s “In The Morning” segment last Friday, 12 June, Lee raised the ire of listeners after coming to his fellow director’s defence.

He said: “I’d just like to say Woody Allen is a great, great filmmaker, and this cancel thing is not just [Allen]. And when we look back on it we are going to see that – short of killing someone – you can’t just erase someone like they never existed.”

Taking to Twitter on Saturday, 13 June, Lee backtracked on his controversial comments.

The 63-year-old wrote: “My words were WRONG [sic]. I do not and will not tolerate sexual harassment, assault or violence. Such treatment causes real damage that can’t be minimized [sic].”
