Southgate Closes Door on Chelsea Rumours
England coach, Gareth Southgate, has rubbished claims that he will take over from Maurizio Sarri as manager of Chelsea.
According to reports, Sarri – who has been struggling to win over Blues fans throughout his two-year tenure – has been identified by Italian Serie A club, Juventus, as their top candidate for their vacant management post.
As a result, speculation has been running rampant that Southgate is on the shortlist for managerial duties at Stamford Bridge.
However, at a pre-match conference ahead of England’s UEFA Nations League third-place play-off against Switzerland on Sunday, 9 June, Southgate played down the rumours of him leaving the national team for the Blues.
He explained: “I’m committed to England, simple as that … there’s no way that I would leave England at this moment in time to take any job. The only thing on my mind is that we’ve got a European Championship next summer, and we’ve got to keep improving this team to be the best possible team we can be for the country.”
