Southampton Boss Tonda Eckert Charged Over Spygate
Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert faces a potential six to twelve-month ban after being charged with three misconduct breaches by the Football Association.
The 33-year-old German stands accused of directing covert spying operations on opponent training sessions involving Middlesbrough, Ipswich Town, and Oxford United between December 2025 and May 2026.
The scandal previously led to the English Football League expelling Saints from last season’s Championship play-offs and imposing a four-point deduction for the upcoming campaign. Independent findings described the espionage as a top-down plan, with leaked messages showing Eckert favoured the gathered intelligence whilst junior analysts felt pressured into unethical behaviour.
The fallout grew severe enough for Eckert to receive police protection following threats. Admitting his mistake, the manager accepted full accountability. “I am responsible and I apologise for bad judgement,” said Eckert.
Despite the ongoing investigation, club owner Dragan Solak and Southampton remain fully behind their manager. Expressing unwavering backing, Solak remarked: “I can support him even if he’s banned, but I can’t make him manage if he’s banned.”
Eckert has until 28 July to respond to the charges.
