South Sudan: China Sends 120 UN Peacekeeping Soldiers
The Chinese government has announced that they are sending 120 additional troops to war torn South Sudan to aid in the United Nations’ peacekeeping efforts in the country.
Thus far, China is the biggest contributor of troops to the UN’s peacekeeping mission. There are currently close to 3000 Chinese troops involved in the United Nations’ peacekeeping mission.
The fighting in South Sudan has gotten worse over the past few months.
Clashes first broke out violently in December 2013, which ultimately resulted in a full blown civil war. Currently there are more than 12 000 UN troops in the country.
The Chinese troops that are making their way to South Sudan now, will replace the Chinese troops that are already there.
Thus far, there have been two Chinese troops killed in battle in the country.
