South Africa Pokes Fun at Ramaphosa’s Mask Malfunction
South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, was trending on social media for all the hilariously wrong reasons after attempting to put on a cloth mask during a televised address.
While addressing the nation on Thursday, 23 April, regarding the easing of lockdown restrictions against the coronavirus, Ramaphosa tried to place the mask over his mouth and nose.
Unfortunately, the president’s fingers struggled with the straps before the elastic band sprung out of his right hand. He then grabbed the band again and got it over his ear, only for the mask to end up covering his eyes.
Eventually, Ramaphosa managed to get it on properly. Of course, his fellow South Africans had a good laugh about his mask malfunction by making memes online.
One Twitter user Photoshopped the president into a picture of the masked Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, while another user joked: “This is how people should wear their mask when they passing [sic] a liquor store.”
Others praised Ramaphosa for providing a light-hearted moment, with one writing: “That mask fitting has lifted our national mood! It’s been a rollercoaster of bad news, butterflies of anticipation.Thank you his Excellency, President Ramaphosa!”
