South Africa: Murder Suspect Takes Own Life

August 18, 2020

One of two men suspected for killing five women in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province has committed suicide.

Between April and August, the dumped bodies of these women were discovered in a sugarcane field in Mtwalume, a settlement located 87 kilometres south of Durban.

Two men – whose identities would have been revealed once they were formally charged – were arrested last Friday, 14 August, and were scheduled to appear in court on Monday, 17 August.

Come Monday morning, however, one of the suspects was found hanging in his holding cell at a police station in the nearby town of Scottburgh.

Addressing angry community members outside Mzumbe Magistrates’ Court, the national police minister, Bheki Cele, confirmed that the suspect had taken his own life. He added that the deceased had confessed to the killings.

Area community policing forum chairperson, Lucky Bhuyeni, bemoaned the suicide for hampering the investigation.

He said: “This is a terrible blow for the [womens’] families because [the suspect] had not given much details on how and why they committed these heinous crimes.”

The other suspect remains in police custody.
