South Africa: Malusi Gigaba Resigns as Member of Parliament

November 15, 2018

Former South African Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba, has resigned as an ANC Member of Parliament.

According to media reports, Gigaba – who has been an MP since 1999 – submitted his resignation letter to the speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete, early this morning.

This follows the embattled politician’s resignation as Home Affairs minister on Tuesday, 13 November, which he stated was “not an admission of guilt” on his part.

In December 2017, Gigaba was found by the Gauteng High Court to have lied under oath regarding the legal action between himself and the billionaire Oppenheimer family over a privately-owned air traffic terminal at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

Additionally, Gigaba was found by the public protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, to be in violation of the constitution and the executive ethics code for lying under oath.

Although Mbete referred Mkhwebane’s report – as well as President Cyril Ramaphosa’s written response to the report – to the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests, this process is likely to fall away now that Gigaba has resigned.
