South Africa: 3 Sangomas Die by Drowning

August 11, 2020

Three sangomas have drowned following an initiation ceremony that was held over the past weekend at a river in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa.

In South Africa’s isiZulu culture, sangomas are known for practising traditional healing and divination.

Per reports, a group of 16 sangomas partook in an initiation ceremony on Saturday, 8 August, at the Mbokodweni River in the Folweni area, located south of Durban.

During the ceremony, three of the attendees – specifically two women and one man – “got into difficulty and drowned.”

According to metro police spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad, a search for the three victims was conducted by members of the South African Police Service’s search-and-rescue team.

Soon, three bodies – that of a 65-year-old woman, a 62-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman – were recovered and handed over to the Folweni police.

An investigation into the drownings has been opened.

This tragic incident comes nine months after a so-called prophet and a teenage congregant drowned during a spiritual ceremony in the Limpopo River.
