Sober Bars Helping Addicts to Keep Off the Bottle

The fear of falling off the wagon after years of sobriety is great for many recovering alcoholics – fortunately for them, certain bars in the United States of America are playing their part to help them hold on.

“Sober bars” are establishments where non-alcoholic beverages such as coffee, de-alcoholised wine and kombucha are served to patrons.

To amp up the fun factor, karaoke nights, fundraisers and community dinners are also held at these bars.

For adults recovering from alcohol addiction, these bars serve as safe spaces where they can socialise and have fun with their friends – all without the fear of relapse.

Paul French – a licensed chemical dependency counselor who owns the Cherokee Recovery Village, a sober bar in Bastrop, Texas – says that recovering alcoholics are then able to adjust to regular bars without feeling the urge to drink.

He explained: “This is exposing yourself to triggers intentionally to weaken those triggers. It will allow you to eventually go into establishments where there’s drinking and partying and craziness, and it won’t affect you as strongly as it did.”
