Simone Biles Smiles as Most Decorated Gymnast in History

October 14, 2019

Simone Biles has cemented her name in the history books once again.

The 22-year-old Olympian gained her 24th and 25th gold medals at the World Championships in Germany on Sunday, 13 October, to become the most decorated gymnast in history.

She won the balance beam competition by more than half a point, thus earning her the gold, despite not feeling up to the task of performing the intricate dismount that shares her name – a double twisting double back.

The record is the latest achievement in her sports career, and Biles shows no signs of taking a break anytime soon.

She broke the previous record previously held by Belarusian athlete, Vitaly Scherbo, with 23 medals in the 1990s.

An earlier opportunity slipped past Biles when she missed the gold at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, but she persisted. Her eyes are now set on the next summer Olympics in Tokyo.

As she collected her record-breaking medals, Biles jokingly said: “It’s older than my age, so I’m pretty thrilled with it.”
