Shepherd Bushiri Flees South Africa

November 16, 2020

Arrest warrants are set to be issued for a self-proclaimed Christian prophet and his wife, who recently fled South Africa.

Earlier this month, Shepherd Bushiri – along with his wife, Mary – were released on R200 000-bail, after they and three other co-accused were charged with fraud, theft and money laundering, which reportedly took place between 2017 and 2019.

Last Wednesday, 11 November, the couple fled the country after allegedly bribing Home Affairs officials to allow them to cross the border into Lesotho.

Afterwards, they somehow crossed the border to their home country of Malawi – once there, Bushiri proclaimed via a Facebook post on Saturday, 14 November, that he and his wife had escaped amid security fears.

This comes as a violation of their bail conditions, which stipulated that they were not allowed to travel outside South Africa.

In addition to the arrest warrants, the South African government has initiated a process to secure the Bushiris’ extradition from Malawi, in accordance with Southern African Development Community protocols.

The Bushiris’ trial is expected to start in May next year.
