Sergio Ramos Sets Red Card Record

December 04, 2017

Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos has set a new record for being given more red cards than any other player in La Liga history.

The defender was sent off during the second-half of his club’s goalless draw against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

The Spanish international was given his second yellow card of the night after elbowing Aritz Aduriz in the face.

This was the 19th red card the 31-year-old has received while playing in La Liga, one more than previous record holders, Xavi Aguado and Pablo Alfaro.

Xavi Aguado appeared to celebrate that he was no longer one of the record holders, posting on twitter: “Finally, it’s over.”

This was the 24th red card of Ramos’s career, which is twice as many as any other Real Madrid player in history. Fernando Hierro is closest to Ramos with 12 reds.

Since he joined the club in 2005, Ramos has only gone one season without being sent off. His first season with the club was his worst, as he was dismissed four times.

According to Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane: “Ramos is not happy, as he thinks he didn’t make contact, that it was not a yellow.”
