Senior Pastor Invests In Bars And Gambling Shops

January 18, 2016

A senior pastor of the Faith Ministries ministry in Zimbabwe, has landed himself in hot water after it was revealed that he had invested in betting shops and beer outlets.

Shingi Munyeza – who is also the president of the Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe – raised more than a few eyebrows when it was revealed to all what he had been investing his money in. Bars and gambling shops do not usually go hand-in-hand with a pastor.

Munyeza currently runs two News Cafè bars in Harare. He also has shares in a gambling firm called Mega Bet.

Munyeza is running all of his businesses legally, so there is no underhanded business going on. However, many of the community members and members of the ministry feel that Munyeza, as a pastor and religious leader, should not be involved in such “sins” such as gambling, drinks etc. and should certainly not be advocating them.

It is clear to see the juxtaposition in which he finds himself.

However, Munyeza – who was the former CEO of African Sun Limited – has defended his businesses, saying that he helps create jobs in a country where more than 80% of the people are unemployed.

When questioned by journalists, he said:

“…When I was running a lot of hotels under African Sun, you [reporters] did not write that I was operating brothels, but now that I have my own things you want to write bad about me. Is what I am doing illegal?”

However, there are still community members that are displeased about Munyeza’s involvement with his various businesses.
