Selena Gomez Shares Heartfelt Message with Graduating Students
Selena Gomez has shone a little light on 2020 by surprising immigrant students during their graduation ceremony on Saturday, 21 May.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, many institutions have resorted to virtual ceremonies to honour students for their dedication, and capping off their years of academic studying.
The 27-year-old pop star dropped in during Define American’s 2020 graduation livestream on YouTube to congratulate the graduates – who are finishing high school or college – and share her own family experiences.
Gomez’s family moved from Mexico to the US before she was born in 1992 – her father is Mexican, and her mother is of Italian descent. She considers herself a “proud, third generation American-Mexican.”
The “Boyfriend” singer said: “Congratulations to all the immigrads! I know this is a virtual ceremony, but it is very real.”
She added: “I want you guys to know that you matter. And your experiences are a huge part of the American story.”
The heartfelt message follows a week after she shared a similar comment with students during the “#Graduation2020: Facebook and Instagram Class of 2020” livestream.
