Sauti Sol named Best African Act at EMAs

MTV (DStv channel 130) and MTV Base (DStv channel 322) have revealed Kenyan Afro-pop group Sauti Sol as the winner of Best African Act at the 2014 MTV EMA, one of the biggest global music events of the year that celebrates the hottest artists from around the world.

The 2014 MTV EMA in association with Smirnoff Ice Double Black with Guarana will broadcast live from the SSE Hydro in Glasgow on MTV and MTV Base on Sunday, November 9 at 10pm CAT.

Sauti Sol  now has the opportunity to be voted into the prestigious Worldwide Act award category, the winner of which will be revealed during the 2014 MTV EMA in Glasgow. Cast your vote at mtvema.com to help Sauti Sol advance to the final round of Worldwide Act voting to represent Africa as one of 10 international Worldwide Act nominees.

Sauti Sol is the first Kenyan act ever to have received this award. They beat fellow nominees Davido, Toofan, Diamond and Goldfish to win the title of Best African Act. Previous winners of Best African Act have included 2Face (2005), Freshlyground (2006), D’Banj (2007 & 2012) and LCNVL (2013).

Voting for the nominations for the Worldwide Act category was opened from 12pm CAT on Thursday 23 October and will closes at 12.59am CAT on Wednesday 29 October. The final list of 10 Worldwide Act nominees will be revealed via mtvema.com on Thursday October, 30. Global hip hop superstar Nicki Minaj is set to host the 2014 MTV EMA with performances from Calvin Harris, Charli XCX, Kiesza, Royal Blood, Ariana Grande and Ed Sheeran.

British rock legend Ozzy Osbourne will be honoured with the Global Icon Award and will be in Glasgow to accept his award.

The 2014 MTV EMA marks the first time that the show will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, and has received support from Glasgow City Marketing Bureau and EventScotland.
