Saudi Arabia: Bomb Explodes at WWI Ceremony

November 12, 2020

At least three people have been wounded after a bomb attack occurred at a Remembrance Day ceremony in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday morning, 11 November.

A ceremony which commemorated the the end of World War I was taking place at a non-Muslim cemetery in the city of Jeddah – in attendance were diplomats from France, Greece, Italy, Britain and the United States of America (USA).

Per reports, an improvised explosive device detonated while the French consulate-general was delivering a speech.

Nadia Chaaya, an eyewitness, told a French media outlet: “We were panicking and feared there could be a second explosion. We left the cemetery … and everyone went their separate ways.”

A British national, a Greek national and a Saudi security officer suffered injuries.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, which the embassies of France, Greece, Italy, Britain and the USA condemned as “cowardly” in a joint statement.

The statement reads: “Such attacks on innocent people are shameful and entirely without justification … We pledge our support to the Saudi authorities as they investigate this attack and prosecute its perpetrators.”
