Salah Inspires Clinical Liverpool to FA Cup Progress

Liverpool surged into the Football Association Cup’s fifth round with a commanding 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, 14 February.

Despite the Seagulls controlling early possession at Anfield Stadium in Liverpool, England, the hosts proved far more efficient. Curtis Jones, deployed in a makeshift right-back role, opened the scoring by converting a low cross from Milos Kerkez three minutes before the interval.

The Reds doubled their lead through a magnificent team move. Mohamed Salah cushioned a volleyed pass into the path of Dominik Szoboszlai, who lashed home at the 56th minute. Salah then secured the win from the penalty spot after being fouled by Pascal Gross just 12 minutes later.

The margin could have been wider, but a late Rio Ngumoha strike was incorrectly ruled out for offside.

Reflecting on the performance during the post-match interview, Arne Slot noted the tactical battle: “Today we have two teams that have a similar style. That want to bring the ball out from the back… and two teams who want to press high.”

Meanwhile, Szoboszlai dismissed comparisons to club icons. “I’m not playing a Steven Gerrard season. Although he was a legend at the club, I’m trying to write my own story,” the midfielder said.

Liverpool’s fifth-round opponents will be confirmed during the draw later today, Monday 16 February.
