SA Plastic Surgeon Earns Top Award
The first black female South African plastic surgeon to qualify from Stellenbosch University has been recognised with a prestigious award.
Dr Mosadi Mahoko achieved excellent results in the 2019 FC Plastic Surgery (SA) Final Examination of the College of Plastic Surgeons.
In commendation of her efforts, the 37-year-old surgeon was recently awarded the coveted Jack Penn Medal, which has only been awarded twice since its inception in 1995.
The inaugural winner, Dr Kotze Engelbrecht, was also a Stellenbosch University graduate.
Although she has yet to receive the award in person due to current lockdown regulations, Dr Mahoko expressed her gratitude to win it.
She said: “If you hunker down, study the work and are passionate about the work you do, you’ll be successful … I’ve worked hard with the aim of being a good, sensible plastic surgeon to all my patients. This medal has given me the validation to believe I deserve to be in this field.”
Through her work, Dr Mahoko hopes to help children with nasal abnormalities, with a focus on performing reconstructive cleft lip and palate surgeries.
